140. Why Appearance Matters

Beauty is but skin deep
A belief often mistaken
Cost to neglect beauty, steep
To find the half-truth broken

To live in a higher plane
A noble ideal
Yet the world is insane
One has to get real

Principles for oneself may be great
But often misunderstood by people
People narrow in mind, irate
With their prejudices to grapple

A mask or a shield does matter
To protect oneself from harm
Bend others’ tendencies for better
Evil forces do lurk, a cause for alarm

Appearance speaks a lot
A tricky and delicate tool
Let it not spoil what you got
Else you become a fool

To ignore one’s looks in detail
Assuming a high self-importance
May eventually tend to fail
Though you be with substance
